Before you go

California visit rules · Checked October 14, 2026

Some errands do not need an office visit. Check your service before you join a line.

How a visit works

Field office pages list wait times with and without an appointment, and many show a Get in Line button. Offices do not give counter service for registration renewal, license or ID renewal (unless your notice says so), driver and vehicle records, or replacement licenses. Do those online, at a DMV kiosk, with a business partner, or by mail.

California DMV guidance
Use a kiosk or business partner

DMV kiosks let you renew your registration, renew a DL/ID, get a replacement license, and get driver or vehicle records without waiting in line. Kiosks are inside select DMV offices and retail locations, and many accept cash. DMV business partners, such as registration services, can also handle registration and title work for a service fee.

California DMV guidance
What to bring for REAL ID

Identity document

Bring one identity document that shows your date of birth and true full name, such as a valid U.S. passport, a certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, or a valid Permanent Resident Card.

Social Security number

You provide your Social Security number on the REAL ID application. You do not need to bring the card. Exceptions may apply.

California residency

Bring two different documents proving California residency. Each must show your first and last name and the mailing address that will be on your card. Examples include a mortgage bill, home utility or cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, and bank statement.

If your name changed

If the name on your identity document is different from your current name, bring a document with the new name. Examples include a certified marriage certificate, domestic partnership documents, court filed adoption documents, or certified divorce documents.

Originals and printed copies

Your identity document must be an original or a certified copy. Copies of residency documents are accepted, but they must be printed. DMV does not keep your original documents.
